Once the shellfish have been caught they are sold direct to wholesalers and specialist shellfish merchants. There they may be kept alive in a giant seawater tank for a few days, keeping them fresh, before being cooked and processed, ready for the table.
You can buy these tasty creatures live and cook them yourself, but most people prefer to let someone else do the hard work.

They sell crabs, lobster and spider crabs in any shapes and sizes: live, fresh, frozen or pasteurised, whatever you need there’s someone out there who can sell you exactly what you want.
Some are sold whole in the shell, others are picked – where the meat is taken out of the shell – or cooked, dressed and put back in the shell, ready to eat. Or try buying straight from the boat, what could be better or fresher?
